What Is French Furniture?

French furniture comes in two main styles, the aristocratic and luxurious designs that were fashionable amongst the wealthy in Paris, as well as the provincial designs from other parts of the country.

Parisian furniture was considered a decorative art, built by dedicated craftsmen who were taught the trade in an unbroken line of apprenticeships. These designs were often ornate, featuring delicate carvings and expensive materials.

Provincial furniture followed similar trends to develop its own classic and welcoming style, along with its own developments such as scalloped carving and cabriole legs. It can be just as intricate or feature a more stripped-back and simple style.
